I think the fence drill is very under–used and and is one of the best drills we as coaches can use to improve hitting mechanics. What is Baseball Inner Circle. How do I join?

I think the transfer method gets the hitter to generate his best consistent combination of contact and power. Keep it coming. Thanks

  71. 71 Michael Berry Feb 17th, 2009 at 11:10 am

I think this information is great for both people who need visual confirmation of what batters are doing wrong as wekk as ciaches that need feedback on just how many swing flaws a batter might be facing (one usually leads to more!). The main thing to keep in mind is that each batter has to be treated individually to adjuest their batting stance and/or the timeg/sequence of their swing. Show really good drills were shown here that can be accompanied with other drills to maximize the feedback to the batter and to build muscle memory.

  72. 72 Steve Weatherford Feb 17th, 2009 at 11:36 am

Great video kenny. My son is always beating the ball into ground and now I know how to correct it. I will also show him this video so that he can see older kids using the tee since he does not think that it works.

  74. 74 Teresa Feb 17th, 2009 at 12:07 pm

  139. 139 Mike T Feb 19th, 2009 at 7:30 am

Really enjoyed the video. Look to implement the front toss into our hitting drills along with alot more tee work.

  140. 140 albert Feb 19th, 2009 at 8:34 am

    very effective drill!!!!

  141. 141 Domenic Maldari Feb 19th, 2009 at 8:38 am

I think the best way to teach is to walk it through in slow motion, and stop at the point to be corrected.some of the infractions were film from the back of the hitter and I could not detect the infractions .

  142. 142 Dan Feb 19th, 2009 at 8:50 am

Great things to look for and the correction procedure of sequence tee, soft toss and fence are easy for the players to do at practice and at home.

  143. 143 Mark Feb 19th, 2009 at 8:54 am

Great video teaching the basics of hitting. Easier to understand what Im seeing with the hitters. How about some fielding videos with drills for quick transition form fielding to throwing etc…

kenny, i see all of these misreadings from many of our future hall of famers, bt that’s why were out trying to solve the puzzle’s of these young baseball players. thank you for your time and experiance. bill

  153. 153 Bob - O Feb 19th, 2009 at 8:47 pm

These tips are great. To improve the video I suggest you show what a proper swing looks like, then the “mistakes”. As you show the drills used for corrections the coaches need to know how each of these drills correct the mistakes.

  154. 154 Coach Rubi Feb 19th, 2009 at 9:06 pm

Great video, and breakdown of the most common hitting mistakes. Thanks for that. Looking forward to more, and thanks for creating this blog.

Good video. I’ll work some in to our practice with the kids.

  156. 156 Coach E. Feb 20th, 2009 at 12:31 am

    Good Stuff Coach Kenny.
    Keep these tip a comon!
My favorite hitting drill is Tee work and Front Soft Toss. This helps me to see good or poor mechanics. Also it helps me to show and communicate to my boys their poor habits and develop new and good muscle memory habits. The key is to build good muscle memory to have consistency at the plate.

    Coach E.

  157. 157 Aaron Feb 20th, 2009 at 7:03 am

    wheres the video

  162. 162 philip Feb 21st, 2009 at 11:17 am

Good Video, keep these type things coming. An excellent video for all coaches and players.

  163. 163 Albert Feb 22nd, 2009 at 7:45 am

Great viedo clips. One thing to note is the importance in having a consistance swing is getting a good inward turn and from the pitchers front veiw the hands are hiding from the pitcher while still maintaining the bat parallel with the lead arm. A good drill is getting in front of the mirror and see if the hands are hidden and the bat is paralled with lead arm and mainting that
position as you are ready to swing the bat.

Keep those video comming and keep up the good work.

  164. 164 Brian ponticello Feb 22nd, 2009 at 8:34 am

  173. 173 Mike M Feb 24th, 2009 at 11:32 pm

Great tips. Very helpfull for my team. Keep ‘em coming

  174. 174 Joe Kerins Feb 25th, 2009 at 12:36 am

    Kenny,
I agree with thexe mistakes but have used some other drills for each that seem to be very effective with my players. One, for example is, for a player who is turning their wrists over too early, have them do a front toss with an axe handle. If you hit the ball with turning your wrists, it will sting like crazy, and tach you to keep top wrist up and bottom down, because the player will feel the difference in a matter of 5 swings.

  175. 175 Duane Feb 25th, 2009 at 10:46 am

If this is part of the “inner circle” series of videos ( which I know it is), then this program should be a great success. I look forward to more videos…

  176. 176 Justin Feb 25th, 2009 at 4:50 pm

When one of my kids pulls off the ball, I tell them to lead with the heel of their stride foot. This keeps their front shoulder closed.

  177. 177 Mike Fantozzi Feb 25th, 2009 at 6:25 pm

Ken these videos are great! After watching them I went to the batting with my 11 year old son. I was able to watch him and decipher a few minor problems with his hitting without getting all head fogged with the technical mechanic stuff. We made some small adjustments during the session and He was making consistent solid contact on the ball. Thanks again for making it simple.

  178. 178 Seth Lamp Feb 25th, 2009 at 6:53 pm

I definitly have an overstriding problem and I will use the drills mentioned to help me.

  179. 179 Danny Larson Feb 25th, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Great stuff. I am a coach for the Kawansis junior league in which my son plays. This will be an asset to my kids and their improvment to their ability to get better at baseball. God bless you and people like you who put this type of information out there for everyone to benifit and better themselves. In this day and times the kids need all we can give then to make them better people as they grow into adults.

  180. 180 Rafael Maldonado Feb 27th, 2009 at 1:26 am

Coach Buford, I liked the video and I love talking about these areas. I truely believe that many kids are so out front because they do not get to the parks like us coaches did when we were kids. Coaches that are in their 30’s and later. We played a lot of slow pitch with our friends and learned to stay back and wait for the ball. Some of my favorite drills to do to help players from lunging or getting out front, over striding or non-pivot and rolling their wrists are:
    1. Good old Pepper. Teaches the kid to use hands, stay inside and bat control.
    2. No stride drill. Teaches the player to load the lower half(backside),pivot, lock his front knee.
3.Batting Tee.Slow motion swing, teaches body control, balance and the feel of body parts working together to get to contact with palm up and palm down. Thanks for the opportunity to talk baseball.

  181. 181 JASON Feb 27th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

Good Video. It definately shows the most common mistakes. The drills i liked for correcting were the soft toss and hitting off the tee.I would definately like to see more hitting and also pitching drills. What drills would you recommend for 9 and 10 yearold boys? Thanks Kenny
